I give because I love the people I am able to serve. There is a healing effect on your life and heart as you willing give to others that I feel every time. It is something I felt as a kid being brought by my father to service projects across our town and observed in his incredible example. It grew to a genuine love of others and a desire to look beyond myself.

How long have you been volunteering at CHC? I have been volunteering at CHC for about a year now and plan on being here much longer.

Why did you choose to volunteer with CHC? When I first heard about CHC from a friend, I looked into it for the chance to speak Spanish and maintain that skill in a medical setting for my future career as a physician. Once a volunteer, I stayed because I fell in love with meeting all the amazing people and being able to serve them so personally and individually.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering? Nothing beats the people we serve. Being able to talk to them about their lives, to be present in sometimes uncomfortable moments and help them to understand fully and feel loved by their community can’t be matched.

Where are you from? I am from a small town east of San Diego, CA called Alpine.

What is your background, training, school, profession, etc? After graduating high school in San Diego I came to Brigham Young University. My major is in Biophysics with a minor in Spanish. I took two years off to serve as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Santiago, Chile. I’ve also been trained as a blacksmith.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? In the rare occasion that I have a spare moment, I love playing volleyball year-round or going biking in the summers. Board games are a favorite, airplanes fascinate me, and I won’t say no to a road trip anywhere.

Why do you believe Volunteering is important? I don’t believe that it’s just important, it’s necessary. Service is the common link between successful, happy lives.

What would you say to others in the community considering volunteering? I would say to those still considering why wait? I heard once that we should never suppress a generous thought, and I have found that to be so important in our lives. There are plenty of good things we can be doing but they don’t mean much until we start acting. I was also told that when looking at good things, we should not try to find the time, we need to make time or else delaying will diminish our desire and maybe even let the moment pass. Act now and you will feel an increased love and understanding come in your life.
